I enjoyed the BBC Radio series Earthsearch by Ken Follet and have passed it on to grateful friends. Several FTL generation ships are sent to find a new homeworld for humanity, but problems arise due to egotistical AI control systems and FTL time distortion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthsearch Thanks for the interesting post!

The Star Seekers wasn't bad, sort of a "juvenile novel". Try this link and the links embedded within to Amazon comments. http://sciencefictionruminations.wordpress.com/science-fiction-book-reviews-by-author/list-of-generation-ship-novels-and-short-stories/ Doug

Perhaps because us Quakers would not use light sabres to resole a plot twist. Consider also Ursula LeGuin's "Paradises Lost" short story in wher collection "The birthday of the World"

I just looked this up on Amazon -- the folks who like it really like it -- but it doesn't have overwhelming support -- like the comment "To say that this is 'slow' is like calling Faulkner 'wordy'." (grin) So I'm not sure whether to add this one to my wish list or not...

Like many of you, I was saddened to hear the news of Leonard Nimoy's death. His Star Trek character Mr. Spock was an inspiration to many of us who entered technical fields.
