I read in the news that a plan is afoot to start space tourism with private operators, by which common people will be able to take a joyride in the space. Will this become one of the firsts in 2012?

Very nice and rare collection of pictures, even though the article only discusses about the different space programs in a fragmented way but still the pictures are very good.

Sorry for the confusion: We are referring to the end of the shuttle program and a long series of space "firsts".

NASA has shifted its focus since retiring the shuttle to going beyond earth orbit with the new heavy lifter with a dull name (Space Launch System). In the interim, the Russian Soyuz will ferry astronauts to the ISS while NASA validates the ability of commercial suppliers like SpaceX to carry cargo -- and eventually crews -- to the ISS.

Thanks for catching. The photo is of the asteroid Vesta, photographed in July by NASA's Vesta probe.

The caption for the top photo on page 2 is repeated from the photo on page 1. Is the photo on page 2 of the asteroid NASA collected dust from?
