The noise cancellation system must be damn quick to generate the opposing noise in real-time.

" Actually, this IS pretty routine. I worked on the 2003 Hummer H2 and it had that feature which I expect it needed more than a Buick would.

To say that Andy Weir's The Martian is an exploration of math, Mars, and feces is a slight simplification. I doubt that the author would have any complaints, though.
