re: What's a good "real engineer" question?

If you have to make a quiz like that you are uncertain of your own skills rather than the others. Maybe you should read about the topic and learn. If you have god skill in a field you know if the other person is real or not. And you are not afraid to ask him to explain himself.

With an answer like that I'm surprised he even got hired.....

Didn't the C and E come from Collector and Emitter in transistor circuits?

Not sure I agree with the color code as a test--that's more a test of how long they have been around, and how good their memory still is! I've been in this business a long time, haven't needed to use or know the color code since way back when. So even a good, but newer, engineer would fail the color-code test, IMO.

Simply ask them to tell you the color code, it's surprising how many don't know that.

Somebody asked me once: Why are voltage regulators needed? It's a basic question but a good one.

You also can't use teflon insulation in space. It degrades.

That's a good hardware engineer design question. You could come up with those types of questions for RF, digital and analog engineers. These days, if the board design is no good, it's not going to work.

Or it could have been common cathode from the tube days.

No such thing in the 70s. This was in the pre-caffe-latte days.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
