The first great application of MEMs was the accelerometers used in cars for air bags. The consumer applications are great for the devices since every game, phone and tablet now use them.

While mobile phone and consumer use is still expanding, the use in automobiles also appears to be expanding and with the addition of new smart systems to the automobile, it should expand even more. So it would appear to make sense to go after more of that part of the market.

Definitively, the consumer market has given MEMs market a big push. I always think that medical appliances and automotive industry are two major markets still. But integrated solutions can help better.

To say that Andy Weir's The Martian is an exploration of math, Mars, and feces is a slight simplification. I doubt that the author would have any complaints, though.
