Its not a pradigm shift.

It is a new re-cycle of a technology archetype. Technology goes round in repeating cycles.

Something people forget due to each cycle being about 18 years long.

Similar to the property cycle. Just long enough for the next generation not to know about and the last to have forgotten.

We were doing 'SDN' with Decnet back in the early 90's. But the the autonomous system came to the fore and jolly good too.

But now that cycle is old and dying and a new one must start if progress is what we want.

True, SDN is much faster, bigger and has more potential today.

Yet it was the same technology in principle.

There is no paradigm shift here.

Just a new technology cycle.

Software-defined networking is essentially virtualization come to the computer network. It promises advances in ease and cost of deploying and managing networks and could be a huge disruptor of today's leaders in comms systems, semis and software. OpenFlow is the first and so far most popular implementation of it. In short, it's one of those often cited paradigm shifts.
