The world's largest market behind China doesn't have a single foundry while China and Taiwan (a tiny spec on the face of the globe) has more than five advance fabs. The Indians should make this a higher priority than their space program.

The Indian government should act sensibly in this matter, it can't afford to spend billions just for wafers when the same can be imported at a cost which it will probably be never match. There are more pressing needs for the country than producing silicon. The power and water shortage is at alarming levels which should be addressed first before spending billions just to rub shoulders with others.

Why do we need so many companies to start a single 300mm fab ? Can't single company like TSMC build its own fab here, is it so risky to build fabs in India ?

@Neo1, biggest problem with Indian government is its not in majority and its a coalition goverment. Many political parties dont support tech projects and thus government is unable to take stand on crucial issues. Moreover corruption is hurting Indias growth. I really wonder if this project will ever happen.

the conditions for setting up lab in china and india are not feasible interms of climatic conditions and other manufacturing conditions. Lot of difficulties are to be faced.That s why hte comapanies are not showing much intreset in that regard

My own take is that unless there is greater involvement of the domestic private sector very little can come out of this initiative. The problem is that a lot of tangible electronics design output is in government sector (various R&D labs for Space, Aerospace, Defense, Nuclear etc.) that has limited potential to scale up and form a domestic market. Also a lot of technology infrastructure steps taken by the government (mainly civil servants,ministers but also heads of govt. sector companies/labs) have led to widespread accusations of corruption("scams") and misuse of public exchequer in recent years and will face enormous public/media scrutiny (through RTI and pending Lokpal(ombudsman bill) and even unfavorable court judgments.

Somehow the technical / business factors holding back semi Fabs in India have not been discussed. Since these days some logic design is being outsourceded to India, that is all they know about semiconductors. Compared to China they are all wet behind the ears which is why after nearly a decade of announcements nothing tangible has happened. They have no idea about the less complex devices ( RF IDs, RF, power, LEDs,.. ) for which there is a growing demand and these could be a sandlot / stepping stone to more complex devices e,g. processors etc. There is hardly any R&D on device physics, materials etc. needed to create the expert manpower to absorb & customize technologies & run Fabs at respectable yields.
