"producing more than one million (8-inch) wafers per month" is a lot. Is this solely Renesas? Or for MCU?

That is how I understand it too. What a shame that the great companies like Mitsubishi, Hitachi etc have come to this. This reminds me of the way the British colonized much of Asia and Africa, but specially India. The local Raja's were agitating against the Mughal empire, the British were invited by the emperor to 'control' the rabble, then asked to 'collect' taxes, and eventually --- we all know the history. TSMC will soon have all the 'crown' jewels no matter NDA's and other agreements. Game over for Japan semiconductors.

This will be very good initiative, that will make the efficient use of the licenses available with both the giants. The specifications they have selected will push the use of the new controller in the coming designs.

My understanding is that in TSMC lingo, "specialty technology" only means something that TSMC can differentiate its service from other foundries.

Why is embedded flash a "specialty technology"? Not mainstream enough?

The fact that it is monos not fg suggests couldn't get to 40 nm conventionally?
