Hey, Frank, I am glad you noticed my tweets from China! A lot of things that I am seeing here in China are paradoxical. Nothing is as crystal clear as one could generalize from afar...

The trick with cranes is not counting all of them, but counting how many actually seem to be in use. In some cities the idle fraction approaches 100%, which is fascinating...

"Those aren't clouds. The good news is, you will rarely need sunscreen." Hah! I remember when they noticed that after widening opening of the ozone layer over the Antarctic, there were increased skin cancer rates in Chile, except for Santiago, Chile, which had lower It turned out that the air pollution, including low-level ozone, filtered the UVA/UVB rays. Good for your skin--not so good for your lungs.

I've heard that there's a Chinese version of Twitter, that also allows 144 characters. But since characters in Chinese (kanji) are full words, you can really express yourself. Makes it a lot more useful than Twitter, in my mind. I guess there are too many people on the internet with short attention spans.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
