Healthcare is value added market with need for high quality and more innovative products. Sony will have very good return from this investment. Sony should also try to aim for more demanding ultrasound probes and systems.

Sony has a very good exposure in Image Capturing as well a Processing, today's medical technologies are totally based on different types of imaging techniques. It will also a great step for world if something great comes out due to this venture.

Consumer product has been falling, more or less, into commodity category. The margin becomes really low. With the competition from China and Taiwan, it has been squeezed more. Going after enterprise and industrial makes more sense to the size of these companies. Only by cooperation and leveraging the strength of each other, they will be able to break out and, create a new and better market in the future.

True. The problem is that those are still "unknowns" -- and not expected to generate a huge revenue to make up for their [losing] TV sales...

It is good to note that Japanese companies are leveraging their knowledge to build products for emerging markets. Rather competing in consumer segments, they are exploring unknown to them territories.
