My best friend is an engineer and he recently decided to make a home automation project by himself, his kids were very interested about the process of creating an "intelligent" home but they were only messing the wires and he told them they are allowed to pick any model of Designer Drains they like if they would let him finish the project by himself. The use of Z-Wave technology gave him a lot of headaches but in the end he managed to connect all the electrical appliances from his house.

If this is a standard, why is the PHY/MAC is provided only by Sigma Designs and Mitsumi? How can others provide these components to the customers using Z-Wave as a standard in their product?

Is this a standard which competes against ZigBee? Which will win? Who has the most products in the market? ZigBee in the USA and Z-wave in Europe? Will this only be a matter or marketing battle or an actual technical advantage ? Or perhaps EMC regulations will determine which technology will be used in which geographical area. I think Europe has a great tradition in wireless development and US is great at marketing. I hope the one with the best technological advantage wins.
