Just to clarify, the Xilinx parts are Cortex-A9, not ARM9. Certainly not the fastest Cortex-A9 parts you can get on the market, but it is the latest ARM instruction set (until ARMv8 devices enter market) so latest and greatest software will run on these Zynq devices.

Compete with ARM ? They are using ARM9 hardcores in the zynq chips

AMD lacks execution strategy because they are not good in marketing. They have great technologies.

Good to note Xilinx. Expect that company to move into mobile space in coming years and compete with ARM

There is chance that ARM will give Intel a real fight. AMD is a toast and out of the picture.

Also looks like xilinx has a QPI interconnect and can put a vertex7 in a xeon socket http://press.xilinx.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=212763&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1733820&highlight=

Any word on optical pcie or other optical interconnects ? Altera and avago demoed an fpga with the optical transceivers built-in but still yet to hear any more about it. http://www.avagotech.com/pages/optical_fpga

"In April it bought an interconnect group from Cray for $140." ---- Wow, that was dirt cheap. ;-) I guess the word "million" has been omitted.

I expect AMD will weigh in here before long with an interconnect based on technology acquired with SeaMicro

Intel is clearly has a plan for interconnect evolution,(IDF may give us more insight) with recent acquisitions, we will very likely see Ethernet (40G, 100G, 400G) and Infiniband continue to be the leaders. Both are a decade ahead on Bandwidth, latency is not a issue if your 4 to 10 times the data rate, (ie RapidIO is only 10G) Network Adapters and switches will be integrated into the processor or/and Chipset, and in many cases already are.

Drones are, in essence, flying autonomous vehicles. Pros & cons surrounding drones today might well foreshadow the debate over the development of self-driving cars. In the context of a strongly regulated aviation industry, "self-flying" drones pose a fresh challenge. How safe is it to fly drones in different environments? Should drones be required for visual line of sight, as are piloted airplanes? Is the technology advancing faster than we can answer the questions it poses? Panelists: Chad Sweet, Director of Engineering, Qualcomm; Yannick Levy, VP Corporate Business Development, Parrot; Jim Williams, ex-FAA drone chief; Michael Drobac, Exec. Director, Small UAV Coalition; Moderator: Junko Yoshida, Chief Int'l Correspondent, EE Times
