Microchip has bought SST & SMSC... why not MIPS... they're already using one of their cores in the PIC32 family... it seems like they have a vested interest in the longevity of the product line...

Not sure it is right to call Bridge Crossing LLC a patent troll. A significant portion of the funding for this came from ARM. The same was true for the Nortel patents acquired by Apple and Microsoft. Are they suddenly trolls?

British company Imagination bought MIPS engineers for 300k$ per each one, plus 80+ core MIPS patents. The remaining 500 patents were sold for 350M$ to another company that's pure IP aka patent trolls. http://www.zdnet.com/chip-designer-mips-acquired-for-60m-patents-sold-for-350m-7000006969/

60 Million, pretty cheap, Mips probably has some interesting IP...is Innovation hoping to compete against its bigger British brother ARM?

MIPS is bought for 60 Million. That is the end of the MIPS architecture. All they are doing there is buying the engineers. 60 million is not even that much money to pay for 160 R&D engineers.

Arm buying Mips makes no sense to me...now thinking more about it, why would anyone buy Mips? someone in embedded systems space?
