A key factor is who has the deepest pockets with cash in them before having to go to the banks to try and get leverage for the deal. That could set the upper limit on how much will be paid.

To say that Andy Weir's The Martian is an exploration of math, Mars, and feces is a slight simplification. I doubt that the author would have any complaints, though.
