No, they would have had a monopoly on stand alone PCI express switch chips. There are no other vendors that make a PCIe switch chip greater then four x1, which TI and Pericom do make. And there seems to be no desire on TI or Pericom's part to enter into the bigger size switch market.
All due respect to the PLX CEO, going forward, especially with respect to ARM based servers, Intel is NOT a player in PCI express switch chips. I suggest he get cracking on innovating and bringing prices down so he can grab the market for PCI Express as a server backplane fabric.
Just look at the Open Computing Project's Microserver spec and you'll see they intend to connect all those Microservers with an x4 PCI Express lane per board. With up to 16 Microserver boards per carrier that requires a lot of switching!
