I recruit engineers, since I did not study engineering in college I am encouraging my daughter to get ready for that as a career or and MD. Comment was made that engineering does not have the same recognition as Attorneys, MDs and Architects. Of the three, MDs really are a plus, Architects struggle more these days especially, but engineers actually make and fix things. They make things work for all of the above. I appreciate working in engineering as a recruiter, I learn a lot, especially since many engineering companies and related are learning environments. Unlike IT, engineers respect others and many teach those willing to assist them.

What I challenge our press colleagues in the Engineering domain (hint, hint EE Times) to do is to bring out the burning passion of people and the work they pour their heart into. Yes, report on the facts and the merits of the work, but bring out the people and I believe it will go a LONG ways to killing the engineering stereotype of anti-social or recluse.

My Dad was a tinkerer, but taught me that I could make or fix anything, if I put my mind to it. I was an ET in the Navy and went back after to get my BSEE. Went on to get MSPM. Son is PhD in Nuclear Eng. Still don't have the recognition of attorneys, MDs, and architects, but that is probably our own fault. Still happy being an engineer and PM.

Engineering is about working out how much we understand about how things work-out, putting theory in practice. Nobody can do engineering in real-time, therefore it is more of a retrospective analytical subject as much as forethought is also required in design part, while compared to say medicine where you are required to deliver everything you know about right away. So, Engineers are seen fixing things that are either broken or not yet created. Its not about saving a life, but making life more meaningful by debugging out the glitches.

People without c65 (or less) tech. experience shouldn't call them engineers...

It is so heartening to see these youngsters not only motivating themselves to become engineers but also inspiring other kids to choose engineering as their profession. They make engineering appear cool and fashionable. America needs many more engineers and our youngsters have the capability of making us a powerhouse of technology innovation. We should encourage them to stay their path and they will do the same to us.

Engineering ties closely to creativity. It doesn't mean all engineers are able to create. It means most can be part of it and some will indeed the creator. The most interesting part of engineering training doesn't finish from graduation. Most young engineers need a good mentor to enlighten their potential. Ultimately, the willingness of the engineers to keep enrich themselves is the key component of long term success. Excellent article. :)

Articles like this make me think there's still hope for the future. Good comments, from obviously self-motivated kids. What else could anyone want? The role model issue is real, although thinking back at my own experience, maybe not that important? My dad was certainly not an engineer or in the sciences, although he did tinker with stuff more or less (did some quite unsafe electrical wiring, though!!). So I doubt you must have that kind of family tie. Teachers are very important, but ultimately, it has to be internal. I think that kids who feel a need to know how and why stuff works know they have that interest, know that very likely few of their friends share that interest, and these kids may not even know what engineering is. Not until they're ready to apply for college. In school, you're exposed to sciences, not to engineering. So for example, I thought I would go into sciences until I discovered the subtle difference, right around the time when I had to pick a college major.

What are the engineering and design challenges in creating successful IoT devices? These devices are usually small, resource-constrained electronics designed to sense, collect, send, and/or interpret data. Some of the devices need to be smart enough to act upon data in real time, 24/7. Specifically the guests will discuss sensors, security, and lessons from IoT deployments.
