I'm not really getting the appeal here. 45 wimply processors in 4U doesn't sound that great, given that anyone can get 16 conventional sockets in the same space - 512 cores, 64 ddr3/1600 channels! maybe the story here is the backplane, which hasn't seemed to get much coverage. does it provide something other than 2x Gb and power?

I believe HP has done something denser than VME (45 processor boards in a 4U) but probably without its mil/aero ruggedness (and cost) and more aligned with PC server standards such as PCI Express and Ethernet interconnects

But Rick, in general ip2design makes a good point, no? As for me, original or not, I'm happy to see a bold idea tried by an American company.

If the new HP servers offer a better value than what the ODMs can offer, then HP will get that business. I think these servers are pretty amazing

The cartridge form factor here is smaller than anything I have seen from the VME and CompactPCI folks that fits into a muscular server-targeted chassis. The VMEs of the world might sharpen their pencils over this one. Maybe they could break into the mainstream server world with another chassis.

Hello Haven't they re-invented the VME architecture ?

An all inclusive architecture. How could they lose? I wanted one until I got to the price tag. Should be a win for server farms.

Drones are, in essence, flying autonomous vehicles. Pros and cons surrounding drones today might well foreshadow the debate over the development of self-driving cars. In the context of a strongly regulated aviation industry, "self-flying" drones pose a fresh challenge. How safe is it to fly drones in different environments? Should drones be required for visual line of sight – as are piloted airplanes? Join EE Times' Junko Yoshida as she moderates a panel of drone experts.
