Excellent summation Les. I spent 10 years with Intel and as an engineer who has been following the trends, I couldn't have said it better myself. Cheers!

Certainly could use GPS in most of the world. Local map database and I'm sure a lot more could be useful. Just need enough power to keep using, small solar panel maybe.

If you have ever been off road in the rest of the world, you don't need a smartphone, either. BTW, there's no LTE there either, so who cares about BB integration?

Intel has to pay most attention to its eroding PC base. How much a sizable portion of the world population needs a PC is quite open to question. Tablets and various forms of convertibles could satisfy much of the 'need' for a PC type product. Intel should concentrate on a very energy efficient and computationally superior tablet platform that can stand alone but also be as extendable as any of the vast majority might want.

Odd article since the low end is where the Intel is targeting their handsets. It looks like they will pursue a grow from the bottom up plan. http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/24/3912428/intel-launches-the-yolo-its-first-smartphone-for-africa

"the share of handsets using applications processors with integrated basebands will expand from 50 to 72 percent from 2012 to 2016." you mean to say 50% of last years smartphones had baseband integrated to App processors!! hard to believe. Thats hard to believe . many of the successful phones last year had a discrete BB chip

Isn't Intel doing LTE and graphic all integrated? Your comments here is hardly accurate. Just wait until 4Q 2013 you may change your mind and hope that you will admit your comment is premature. If intel indeed provide these integration, Qualcomm and Nvidia and ARM look out!
