Andrzej11 is right--this is a highly defined lab experiment filtered through the marketing department. With high-gain antenna arrays on towers 2 km apart in the desert and enough transmitting power you could overcome the path loss. But this won't be appearing in cell phones any time soon.

Did they also discuss how they were going to deal with penetration losses such as over 40 db through tinted glass at 28 Ghz rendering building and car interiors as essentially signal dead zones?

Samsung is showing they have vision and enough confidence to put it out publicly. The real winners are the cell phone companies. At these speeds, they have far less connect time for the standard e-mail, web pages and little comments like this.

A press release for a technology to be launched in 2020! In the labs atleast 10 other companies must be doing similar things. Samsung is focusing more on marketing and maneuvering the media than its products.
