Peter – As a research consortium we welcome any and all companies to come join us in our efforts to find ways to improve the energy efficiency of ICT networks, further reduce the energy consumption of communication networks and help the environment while we’re doing it. We agree that it is important for chip vendors to be involved in GreenTouch and appreciate your call to action here. Having chip vendors actively participating in the large array of research projects underway within the consortium would allow us to expand our research on the ways new chip technologies will affect and/or help with energy efficiency and ultimately the forecasted reduction possibilities for 2020 and beyond. GreenTouch remains an open consortium and we appreciate the opportunity for further collaboration in the industry with leading experts and companies in general. As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
