32-bit architectures can yield significant power savings over 8-bit since you can do more work per instruction.

GoldFire will be used just for getting fused data. And it is the duty of application processor to analyse and communicate over Internet. If we add into consideration the mobility we have to think about power saving techniques.

If you're running a comm stack like TCP/IP or BTLE or similar 32 bit isn't a bad idea.

Oh, there are things in the world with internet connection, which need a lot of computation power. ;-) But you are right, for many (maybe most) devices 16 or even 8 bit would be absolutely enough.

I thought IoT would be low power low cost, not 32 bit. Why is a 32 bit processor required for this? Isn't it overkill?

ColdFire does the job without paying any royalty. In addition to that, it is bundled with an in-house OS. An easy way to start developing apps.
