NFC has been around as "next big thing" to come for a while...at least 10 years. It was proposed for Bluetooth device pairing (Simple Secure Pairing) but never be popular. WiFi alliance also considered NFC for WPS (WiFi Protected Setup), but it was dropped in favor of much cheaper push button (PBC) and PIN code method.
