Not all teams were DARPA funded. Look at the second place team in virtual WPI. Unfunded and still beat out funded teams.

I agree. There is also the push to create co-robots--industrial robots that can safely work alongside humans:

Robots are used in production (cars), warehouses, etc...well defined tasks...it will be a while until they are useful in consumer applications...I would give it 20 years

I'm all for personal robots--I have a lot of jobs I would like to off-load to them--but so far I have been disppointed in even the most specialized home robots. I'm beginning to think robotics needs a "killer app" to break open the home market.

The only thing I worry about is ... well, did you see my book review on Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson?

In future it will be needed to have robots ready to be in situations where it pricey to send humans. Warfields, extreme temperature conditions or may just for doing your house work.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
