Not all teams were DARPA funded. Look at the second place team in virtual WPI. Unfunded and still beat out funded teams.

I agree. There is also the push to create co-robots--industrial robots that can safely work alongside humans:

Robots are used in production (cars), warehouses, etc...well defined tasks...it will be a while until they are useful in consumer applications...I would give it 20 years

I'm all for personal robots--I have a lot of jobs I would like to off-load to them--but so far I have been disppointed in even the most specialized home robots. I'm beginning to think robotics needs a "killer app" to break open the home market.

In future it will be needed to have robots ready to be in situations where it pricey to send humans. Warfields, extreme temperature conditions or may just for doing your house work.
