There is a balance to be had between protecitng IP and getting to market - my belief is that patents are all well and good but if you don't have the cash reserves, and time, to defend them in court then your best protection is your brand and ability to act fast in the market place. At the end of the day we don't make any money if there is no market for the product, best to talk and show your idea to people to get feedback than risk launching something no one wants.
Nothing annoys me more than a start up in "Stealth Mode" there is always something you can talk about, just be sensible on the fine details.
