I agree with you Peter. The real factor is that there is a shortage of workers available at the salaries companies want to pay, with the possible exception of analog where there is such a limited number of people in the field.

The key indicator of a worker shortage would be lengthening lists of advertized jobs with increased salaries.

I saw that happen in the late 1990s boom.

I don't remember seeing it this millenium.

To say that Andy Weir's The Martian is an exploration of math, Mars, and feces is a slight simplification. I doubt that the author would have any complaints, though.
