Very cool technology. The next question becomes "how much"?


I still have a 100MHz Analog scope around collecting dust somewhere, but my 1GHz, 5gsps scope does pretty much everything I need ... for now.

 

I have to imagine the probes and practices for capturing signals at this level is complex as well.

Too far out of my area of need I am afraid. I am still reasonably happy with my 100MHz scope :-) Great to hear about this breakthrough though.

High-speed scopes

LeCroy will surely have a demonstration at DesignCon 2014. I wouldn't be surprised if the company has a billboard on the 101 freeway as you head south from SFO airport to Santa Clara. Only in Silicon Valley.

I don't usually need a high speed scope, but it is good to see that progress is being made in this area.  I always enjoy teaching the new engineers about measurement.  When they see a bad signal on a low speed scope, they assume that it is real.  When I have them take a look with a better scope, they understand that the tool they use makes a difference.  As Clint would say, "A man's got to know his limitations."

Unfortunately, this is still in the prototype stage, so we are a ways off from knowing pricing...I'll keep you posted though.

This is great!  My O-scope isn't good to 100MHz.  I'm sure it will be awhile before this is affordable, but it a big step on the way to looking at terahertz waves.

Are you enthusiastic about this news, or is this too far out of your area of need for a scope? I'm working to find out more about the design challenges in creating this prototype. More info when I have it.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
