yes technology downturn cycle is shorter than other industries but still a five time fold increase in profit is really impressive.

@daleste-

"I think the future is good for memory, but I would not be surprised to see cycles."

I think we can count on continued cyclicality, can't we? That's been the one constant in the history of memory chips- cycles, boom and bust.

Of course what is good for the memory chip vendors is bad for the memory chip buyers.

So while smaller memory companies may see some reason for existence after many years living on hope this does mean that we might see some electronic equipment price inflation.

As you say, better enjoy it while you can.  Memory prices have historically been very cyclic.  I think the future is good for memory, but I would not be surprised to see cycles.

Great to hear about the come back of hynix. The memory companies defijitely having a dream run because of the latest surge in smart phones and tablets.

i agree. Also short term furture looks good as smartphones, tablets will have more memory in coming time and this war is only going to intensify with more RAM and internal memory.

Interesting to see that Hynix has taken flight after coming under the wing of SK. Likely it has a lot to do with a general uptick in pricing for DRAM, which has been going steady for several months (see DRAM Prices Improving Rapidly). Hynix and the other memory chip vendors better enjoy it while it lasts, because we all know how these things go.

IoT Network Shoot Out
July 16, 1pm EDT Thursday

Replay available now: A handful of emerging network technologies are competing to be the preferred wide-area connection for the Internet of Things. All claim lower costs and power use than cellular but none have wide deployment yet. Listen in as proponents of leading contenders make their case to be the metro or national IoT network of the future. Rick Merritt, EE Times Silicon Valley Bureau Chief, moderators this discussion. Join in and ask his guests questions.
