Actually, thinking about it some more, I'd argue they're not real MECHANICAL engineers. Soldering is a mechanical process that connects components together and stops them falling off the PCB. It doesn't have much to do with electrical or electronic engineering.

I don't know what to say -- we are turning into a society where everyone will have to be wrapped in bubblewrap before leaving the home -- "What happened to the engineers of yore?" I cry!

Who needs soldering when you have simulation? You don't hand solder connectors onto boards that carry 25Gbps signals.

@mgburr: One other thing that seems to be missing, Analog!  Let's just say it's a good thing I still have my Mimms books handy for him to peruse.

Rick Curl was telling me about a really good analog book he strongle recommends -- he's going to bring it by my office the next time he's up here visiting.
