Re: Bah humbug about soldering's importance

Actually, thinking about it some more, I'd argue they're not real MECHANICAL engineers. Soldering is a mechanical process that connects components together and stops them falling off the PCB. It doesn't have much to do with electrical or electronic engineering.

@measurementblues  You're a calamity in the making!  Soldering scars, falling out of boats, wow it would be fun to have dinner with you and just hear war stories!

KF, to make the lawyers happy, you could hold a contect for who has the best scar from soldering. I'd win that one.

@kfield: No wonder soldering is becoming a lost art!!!

I don't know what to say -- we are turning into a society where everyone will have to be wrapped in bubblewrap before leaving the home -- "What happened to the engineers of yore?" I cry!

Who needs soldering when you have simulation? You don't hand solder connectors onto boards that carry 25Gbps signals.

@Max  Even if someone else gives the training, we would have insurance issues. No wonder soldering is becoming a lost art!!!

@MeasurementBlues: I've got a scar on my left arm from a wave solder machine...

Hi Martin -- I expected nothing less from you :-)

@mgburr: One other thing that seems to be missing, Analog!  Let's just say it's a good thing I still have my Mimms books handy for him to peruse.

Rick Curl was telling me about a really good analog book he strongle recommends -- he's going to bring it by my office the next time he's up here visiting.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
