Nice presentation Brian

Thanks Brian, very interesting session

Rookie

software engineer

Rookie

Thank you @BrianBailey for the informative session

Rookie

Thank you Brian.

What would be the role of human being in your future world?

Rookie

thanks Brian, good to know. Time to earn my keep. see all tomorrow.

Rookie

OK - I am going to leave the chat for today. See everyone tomorrow.

I believe the GPS runs in two modes. One is continuous and can be used by applications and that can be turned off. However, there is a part of it - a locate on demand - that cannot be turned off (at least in this country). This is not battery draining because as soon as the location is gathered, the GPS sub-system is powered down again.

Blogger

@BrianBailey

Also tell about of mandatory GPS in some chapter of CSI and similar serials :-)

and say sma thing, is mandatory for prevent a we can say illegal use of phone.

Rookie

@Dan had the same thought, why have mandatory GPS while the user has the option of turning it off, unless someone finds a way to conveniently save power and still keep the GS on without draining the battery

Rookie

This is a good example of issues being different around the globe and has to be taken into account with features, privacy etc. Means that all products have to be "agile"

Blogger

the question about mandatory GPS in mobile phones is that most people turn off features to extend battery life. I turn off GPS, WiFi and BlueTooth. That seems to defeat the GPS locating feature unless it can be remotely enabled?

Rookie

@BrianBailey

In documental say that the Congress of USa approved a legilation to all phone were susceptible for be "traceable".

In European Union still isn`t mandatory have GPS, but is necesary register the phone to a indentified user.

Rookie

It is often bad things that force us forward. The events are tragic but perhaps the legacy is good for everyone - although we often dont think about it in that way.

Blogger

@BrianBailey

Yes I see a documental that talk about S-11 from diferent points of view, and one speak about of control of the phones (in Spain also have a sad remember of bad use of the phone in our M-11).

Rookie

@fjgalan - I like view in Discovery Channel. Can you expand more?

Blogger

Also security concerns change in different parts of the world. Has to take all of them into consideration.

Blogger

GPS is mandatory mainly in USA from S-11.

Almost I like view in Discovery Channel.

Rookie

I flip-flop on the security issue. There are times when I think cool - so much information sharing would be wonderful and then I think about how that informationm could be used maliciously and I get scared.

Blogger

Fantastic.  Can't wait for tomorrow!

Rookie

Yes, with a landline, your address is known. With a cellphne you could be anywhere. Just knowing what tower you are connected to is not enough. IT must be able to provide a location to within a certain level of accuracy.

Blogger

you asked to tell what we think about IoT. I see both sides of coin: comfort to consumer and as i think low security level. That's why i asked about components growing

Rookie

I had no idea GPS was mandatory on phones. For "emergencies."

Rookie

i am in first year of electrical and electronics engineering from kurukshetra university (NEW DELHI, INDIA)

Rookie

Good points!  Fascinating.

Rookie

Also, remember the space and time aspect. If you set sharing of RFID information in the house, then what if a visitor enters the geographic region. Do you want to turn it off?

Blogger

You may want your RFID to be shared in certain geographic regions, such as your house, but not outside of it. Could get complicated.

Blogger

Which component of IoT grows slower??? Hmmm, Not sure. I think any one of them could slow the rest.

Blogger

Wether or not private information is allowed to be shared from the RFid device the system trying to read it will still know it has been there.

Rookie

Thanks - very though provoking!  Enjoyed the session.

Rookie

It becomes a more difficult question to deal with when things are not "owned" by a person. Who can opt in or not opt in to information sharing.

Blogger

thanks Brian and Caleb, interesting intro. I'll be back tomorrow.

Rookie

Hi, Brian! Witch component of IoT grows slower?

Rookie

SaaS isd very integral long term. For example - face recxognition. You don't want to own or eve rent the software - you want to pay for the service it performs.

Blogger

Thanks Brian & everyone involved. Nice opening session.

Rookie

Today, RFID tags are predefined, but I have seen developments where they have storage and can receive and hold data. Will be acouple of years perhaps before they become pervasive.

Blogger

I think it's important to let people make their own risk/reward analysis before participating in RFID tagging programs. It will lead to less effective systems, but hopefully maintains some personal liberties. As an engineer, I'm willing to accept a less effective system to maintain some privacy and choice. Think of privacy as being a design input.

Rookie

Do you think that everione will just adopt 802.15.4, instead of going with something as a highr stack like zigbee,  do their own meshing and a gateway to access the rest of other vendors smart devices in a loose way?

Rookie

how does "software as services" play into the IoT - it would seem to be integral- or is the IoT world one of asic's and pld 's?

Rookie

I think privacy shouldn´t be an issue if there is a permission based system that the user can control.

Rookie

Is the range of RFID at the point where it could be used to tell if I am in a room so that the lights could turn on automatically?

Rookie

Brian do you see sensors becoming more and more prominent going forward? Will RFID tags include dynamic sensors?

privacy is so difficuilt to measure or decide on. Who gets the information, do you trust them, the potential good or harm from using the information. The comfort level even changes over time and the information can't be recalled.

Tough choices.

Rookie

most electroincs door lock for homes at the monent still have a keyed bolt

Rookie

Can RFID be used for dynamic information? Or are the chipped embedded with one set of information and that is all for the life of the RFID chip?

Rookie

I have seen examples of light switches that are powered just from the rocking action of the switch itself. Provides enough power to transmit the switch change and then goes dead again.

Blogger

Looking forward to the rest of the week!  Thanks for doing this presentation.  I work in mobile payments and security as well as privacy are paramount issues I have to deal with.  See you tomorrow.

Rookie

I think one of the issues with front door locks is the power issue. We have see hotels migrate over to electronic locks, but what happens if he battery runs down?

Blogger

Thanks Brian.

Rookie

I am not the fastest typist in the world so I am sorry if I miss any of your questions. I will go over the message log after the event has finished to see if there were questions that I missed or could have answered more fully.

Blogger

My cat can get into our house without a key, because the cat flap recognises his tag.

I have to rummage in my pockets to find the key to unlock my door.  Most cars have remote unlocking, why don't most house front doors ?

Rookie

I fix systems put together by naive system integrators after all the vendors have finished pointing at each other declaring the other guy's part is at fault. I do it all.

Hardware design and maintnance

Rookie

There is actully an Android develpment system that runs on Android!

Rookie

Quite a good definition of an embedded system !

Rookie

I work in the medical device field, surgical systems mostly. Our communication and camera devices are mostly digital, but the instruments we develop that actually perform the work in surgery are analog. We have several devices that communicate with each other, sense patient data, and are connected to our own specific network.

Rookie

Systems vendors who send orders to production orders online.

Rookie

What is going to replace ZigBee?

Rookie

We are also devloping csome of these insuments with dual networked interfaces.

Rookie

We are seeing more and more devices coming online on the factory floor, often with multiple interfaces including both control networks and web interfaces.

The ability to remotely connect to an instrument itself for real time values or direct troubleshooting is becoming commonplace.

Remote connections aren't just for PLCs anymore!

Rookie

it would be surprising if we could not find at least one example of how we have expirenced in both our home and work lives

Rookie

Iot worries me. Lots of things doing simple or complex tasks on their own. Near impossible to predict all the interactions.

Rookie

Especially when they want to add more and more sensors. Go beyond temp and humidity.

Ok. Now I am not even getting anything in IE. I updated my flash player just now. Still it isn't working in FF and chrome. And not in IE as well..

Rookie

not using/developing any IoT

Rookie

Collecting space temperatues etc. from remote locations.

Rookie

We are really looking towards the IOT. We are seeing more demand for data to make decisions with. Getting that back to the user requires IOT.

gigantic opportunity for the US and me as an investor in companies driving implementations in this technology - will drive US mfg. renaissance

Rookie

I think that some things on the internet do not need to be there!

Rookie

we're not yet using iOT

Rookie

by udpdating flash

or turning off windows defender

or switching browser ;-)

Rookie

@dfbaechtel, can you try another browser?

Blogger

Audio is perfect for me using 15 year old laptop with 32 bit processor using Chrome.

There are no pauses or other defects.

Audio Play keeps pauseing and dropping out inappropriately on IE 9. How do I fix this? This is BAD !!

Rookie

Slide 4

How to expand the service and control individual items (in the industry)?

Rookie

audio is perfect for me in FF

Rookie

@Richw42, if you have a better solution, feel free to email me the info. caleb.kraft@ubm.com I don't make any garantees but I'll pass it along

Blogger

this is all on dry pavement, the nightmare begins with winter driving in Canada. ice, snow reduced visibility, ruts and other cars.

Rookie

audio is working intermittently... coming and going :(

Rookie

@ahmedsa Try Firefox or Chrome. Your Flash player may be out of date. I switched to FF and it started working

Why does EE Times put up with this POS software that causes so much trouble for so many people?

Rookie

@krh82, yes.

Have you

-hit play?

-tried reloading the page?

-tried another browser?

Blogger

@krh82 yes hit play on the player

IE is also making problem. It's not continuous. :(

Rookie

Is anyone talking yet?

Rookie

True for me as well.. Chrome and FF didn't work. But IE is working..

Rookie

Chrome and firefox didnt work for me but internet explorer did.

Rookie

Good morning Dananet0, be sure to download the slides at the link above

Blogger

yes, Chrom and FF works best

Rookie

@ahmedsa, if reloading didn't work, try another browser if possible.

Blogger

what is the time frame?

Rookie

I have hit the 'play' button, but it just play "Love talk radio" for 3 seconds and then nothing.. Tried refreshing.. my flash player is also updated.. :(

Rookie

@ahmedsa, it has begun.

Blogger

I'm on - Letchworth UK.

Rookie

it started yes, check flash player

Rookie

hit the play button Ahmedsa

Rookie

Has it started? I can see the audio player but nothing is playing, right?

Good evening for all from Valladolid, Spain

Is my debut in the EETU :-)

Rookie

Yes, the weather is a kick in the butt in these parts, no doubt but not as bad as that famous general Phil Sheridan quote would have it, who, after a campaign in Texas was asked if he like the country, he is reputed to have said: "If I was to be given Texas, I'd live in hell and rent out Texas!"

Rookie

Exactly! I will take your lows as my highs!

Blogger

to be clear - I was talking about night time low's - avg high in DFW land this time of year is high 90's

Rookie

Generally high 70's to low 80's but today a  balmy 72!  Whoo hoo!

Rookie

@wgt0823 - what do you define as not to warm. That to me would be highs in the 70s. I am guessing that was your nighttime low!

Blogger

Good morning from suburban Ft. Worth Texas - not too hot for a change.
