Well... yes, a "personalized train" would be so much more convenient. Then you could play games, text, talk, and sleep while you travel. All in the comfort of your own car. Frankly, since I tend to make long car trips, I can see the appeal!

Jannine - I think the current generation is ready for that day already. Apparently, quite a large portion of young folks today really don't have much interest in driving.

S0nce I was a young girl I've thought that self-driving cars would lead to: less traffic, fewer accidents, better gas mileage. In my 9-year old mind, I had envisioned the major interstates runnning with tracks down each lane (kind of like the car wash), and you programmed in which exit you wanted to get off (this was long before 'wireless' technology). Then your car would be merged to that exit and set "free" when you got there. (Kind of like getting the rocket in Mario Karts...). At any rate, I am looking forward to seeing where self-driving cars go... no pun intended.

I see this as a very good sign for the future of self-driving cars. It's one thing to put out a concept car with the technology, but it's a big step further to put the technology to actual use.

Certainly, this is an early adopter useage and not fully representative of the real world, but real-world use takes longer if there aren't early adopters.

Using robots for the repetitive tasks is not a new idea. Robots are the best solutions to work in hazardous or humanly demanding conditions .

Here in India I have seen robots being used to do endurance testing of vehicles by the Government type approving authority.

So what is new?

The whole world is  now talking about driver less cars on the freeways and even in city traffic.

So what is so new being done by Ford by test driving their trucks by the robots?
