quite a lot of work for single person. Cleaning up the wiring, cable and harness is itself the big job aprt from design issues.

Hi Dylan, We have at least half dozen old working ones in our basement! Great fun, especially when we are having a party. I'm still holding out hope for a Rocky & Bullwinkle machine, but they are very very pricey. RIght now the family favorite is probably Cyclone.

There are still pinball machines being made, they have fancy computer driven displays and stuff now.

There is also a virtual pinball system that is very impressive (click here to see one). they use two high definition displays to miimic the pinball machine. I'd love to have one of these.

This is fun and I would like to make something of my own. I have to make some time for that. Working on it. 

Congrats... I wonder how he gets his kids involved... how old are they?

That's a great project. I dearly miss the old fashioned pinball machine. That's a form of entertainment we need to bring back. Maybe with a 21st century twist?

Switching- with Solenoids

The first electronics teacher I had (in High School) taught us debugging techniques by creating several 'circuit' boards (wooden planks) where switches, solenoids and light bulbs were connected up in different ways. Each board had a particular 'bug' (missing connection, miss-wire, short circuit) that we needed to find and fix. This was the reason I got into electronics as a profession. Getting paid to figure out these puzzles and then seeing something work that I fixed- what a deal!

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
