I'm glad you called this one out because it didn't get much play at the time given its significance.

This is the ammo Cisco needs to get into cellular infrastructure, specifically small cell base stations which is the big growth area. Now Cisco will go up against Alca-Lu, Ericcsion, NSN and Huawei.

That sounds like a tall order. Cisco is a migthy corporation but it's going to have its hands full going head to head with those guys in small cell base stations, I would think.

Indeed it will, but if you had to back one of the two or three small to medium companies making a good go at this area and put major money behind them, Ubiquisys is as good a pick as any and just in time for the purchase orders about to hit the streets.

I thought Cisco has been battling Alca-Lu, Huawei and Ericsson already, in fact for several years, we used to sell of the above the same ASICs long time ago

In this realm, Cisco also swallowed up BroadHop, a policy managment company with excellent technology. Enterprise and hybrid networks are clearly their focus now.

What amazes me in those deals is how small they are. Only the first two are over $2B. I still rememeber the times when as fabless IC networking company we would aquire 5-6 small companies, each a billion or more

Krisi: Smaller deals can indicate that the acquiring company is trying to close the gaps in its own products, or expand incrementally in new areas.  I think that shows a certain maturity in the industry.  And a billion is still a lot of money in an industry that has been fragmented a bit in recent years.

@Krisi: Certainly Cisco battles the Ericssons and Alca-Lus in enterprise and telco networking (routers, switches).

But challenging them in wireless base stations is new, I think.
