NIST claims they will be a useful technology for simulating quantum phenomena that are too difficult to simulate on conventional computers--not just for quantum computers, but for all sorts of materials whose behavior is mysterious today, such as high-temperature superconductors.

hhmmm...it is like a gadget than can simulate computing but can't compute itself...sounds like a scientific discovery but not a useful technology

Using atomic clocks as quantum simulators will allow researchers to explore the phenomena on which quantum computers will be based, but won't actually enable the quantum computers themselves.
