@Etmax: I upgraded the RAM to 2k by piggy-backing an additional 1k. What a lot of RAM that was back then.

It really was ... but young folks these days cannot understand just what things were like in those days...

Yeah I want to see the Jobs movie too, but I doubt my wife will want to see it, she's more into crafty stuff. Soldering DIP's reminds me of my first Z80 based computer, a Sinclair knock-off. I upgraded the RAM to 2k by piggy-backing an additional 1k. What a lot of RAM that was back then.

@kdwyer: What is your take on the number of bpp for embedded applications?

It all depends on what info you are trying to display -- if it's just really boring ASCII text you could get by with 1 bit per pixel (LOL). Check out my blog Using FPGAs to Generate Different Color Depths

What? You're 21 also? LOL

I went to see that "Jobs" film about Steve Jobs wit hmy wife yesterday evening -- the images of them hand-soldering DIP sockets onto boards really took me back.

Speaking of 21, this year I celebrated the 35th anniversary of my 21st birthday LOL

I htink probably LCD's are the best bet with the user experience in colour images and added with the reducing cost of LCD's because of large scale adaptation.

How many bpp is enough?

What is your take on the number of bpp for embedded applications?

16bpp seems to be a good choice and makes the data trasnfer more efficient on a 32bit system when compared to 18 or 24bpp options.

I think we'll be seeing more low power e-ink displays as we move forward. They're already cropping up around the web on a few diy projects.

I remember when we thought 7-segment LED displays were pretty amazing -- then we thought LCD display swith "Chunky Graphics" were pretty cool...

Today's LCD displays are incredible ... I can only imagine what the future will bring...

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
