The McHck can be bootstrapped by connecting three lines (reset, clock and data) from another board. The Freescale FRDM-K20D50M board is the most likely candidate (~$18) for bootstrapping but it may be doable with other FRDM boards which have the same OpenSDA micro on them.

The reason to choose move away from Arduino would be because the McHck and FRDM boards are inexpensive, have more GPIO and have higher core speed. Plus the FRDM boards were designed to accept standard shields but they all offer an extra two rows of pins.
I would only suggest this route if you were really wanting to make it yourself. If you just wanted an arduino in a smaller package, there are plenty to choose from that are pre-assembled. The great thing about the Arduino system is that once you learn, you can choose from a wide variety of form factors.
