Programming the McHck

The McHck can be bootstrapped by connecting three lines (reset, clock and data) from another board. The Freescale FRDM-K20D50M board is the most likely candidate (~$18) for bootstrapping but it may be doable with other FRDM boards which have the same OpenSDA micro on them.

I've been having a blast playing with the FRDM-KL25Z board for the local Freescale Cup autonomous smart car competition. I'm using mbed.org, an online IDE...

I'm waiting on samples of bare KL25Z in QFN32 so I can start building them up on some eBay breakout boards. I have a myriad of projects planned for these...

The reason to choose move away from Arduino would be because the McHck and FRDM boards are inexpensive, have more GPIO and have higher core speed. Plus the FRDM boards were designed to accept standard shields but they all offer an extra two rows of pins.

I would only suggest this route if you were really wanting to make it yourself. If you just wanted an arduino in a smaller package, there are plenty to choose from that are pre-assembled. The great thing about the Arduino system is that once you learn, you can choose from a wide variety of form factors.

@Caleb: ...once you assemble the board you have to use an external programmer to put the boot loader in place.

I'm assuming that you can get chips that have been pre-loaded with the boot loader from other members of the community.

This really is a clever idea -- I might have been tempted to go this route mysef, but I just started playing with the Arduino ... so I'm going to stick with that for a while :-)

@Caleb: yep, there are several that do this, like the digispark.

Very clever -- I'd simply never thought of it, but it makes so much sense for a low-cost board

yes, once you assemble the board you have to use an external programmer to put the boot loader in place. After that, you're good to go!

Boot Loader?

Doesn't the microcontroller have to be pre-loaded with a boot loader to allow the downloading of user programs from the PC?

Hi Caleb -- so the board itself forms the USB connector -- you just plug it into a USB port for power and to program it -- is that right?

@Sheetal.Pandey: What are the application where it can be used.

From what I can see you are limited only by your imagination...

@kfield: ...this project would make a very good hands-on workshop for DesignWest 2014!
