This sounds like a neat event.  For some reason, these types of events always attract a lot of students from MIT.  I wish this type of involvement in the field of Open Source Hardware (OSHW) would happen at other colleges and universities.  Hats off to the organizers.

I have no idea if any of those companies are doing open hardware. I have a hard time believing that they would, since they've built their empires on a completely different paradigm. However, both HP and IBM have embraced some open source software projects, so who knows!

Interesting. Any examples of participation by top tier hardware companies...an HP, IBM, Intel or Cisco for instance? What ndo they thinbk of all this?

There was a lawyer who spoke about just completely not bothering to get patents, but that isn't what you're looking for. 

there was a panel discussion about attribution that I missed though.

I think that open source tries not to infringe on patents just like any other system. The only difference is how they publish their own product.

Were there any sessions on silicon intellectual property issues given all the focus on patent infringement suits in semis?

it was somewhere close to 1000. I don't suspect that it was promoted on campus that much. They knew they were going to sell out tickets and they did pretty quickly. I think next year they'll have to have a much larger space and possibly go to two days.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
