I think is always ahead of the curve. It is an infinitely resourced firm that can invest in anything they dream, at least before the last five years.

It is function of die size. die of size 50 sq mm to 150 sq mm, cost per transistor goes to 2x type due to yield impact.

Intel has been using FinFET since 22nm itself. TSMC is bit behind on that.

Intel is a very good marketing company. Sure, it has great engineering als. The strides in Intel do not have much to do with process but its capacity to entice and keep partners in its technology ecosystem. If you cannot match that, you have no chance. Not sure this changes it but we celebrate this effort at least.

14 nm Intel FinFET appearance yet?

The 14 nm FinFET from Intel has not appeared yet (in terms of specs)? Only this can be fairly compared against TSMC 16 nm FinFET.

I am not sure about breaking an Intel monopoly.

It seems to me that Intel has done a good job at persuading Microsoft to keep ARM out of the notebook PC.

I am not sure that the availability of FinFET chips make much impact on that decision.

Now the questions are: how good is TSMC's FinFET process, how quickly can design teams get to market with it, and what is the yield like. Many a slip twixt cup and lip.

A good time for TSMC is about to come as it is doing what Intel is doing. Next generation is using ARM Architecture in all the electronic devices and if this works fine it will be a major step in breaking the monopoly of Intel in the computing environment.
