Over in the UK we have a similar project which has been running for a few years. I have been working with the University of Southampton to bring this to fruition.

When the water & dust-proof 'corrugated duct' cover is fitted to the mechanics, I believe our design is far more practical for use on Mars; or anywhere outside of a dry, flat, dust-free lab environment for that matter.

Here is a photo of the CAD model of the internal mechanics:

This snake design uses compliant actuators to provide more lifelike movement gaits and greater real-world robustness.

I've seen several snake designs similar to this. They could probably fit a dust-tight sleeve over this and it could maneuver decently.

I imagine it's being adapted for its environment. The videos I saw on the snake to date have all been showing it on a tile floor, but I imagine ESA was clear with its must-have list for this project. i bet the dragon would have no trouble at all!

Can the robot snake handle much dirt and dust? Because Mars has a lot of that.

Hi Caleb,

Yeah, I thought the wheels were limiting as well. It seems this snake concept has been evolving over the past several years. It will be interesting to see what happens in December when the report is turned in.

I thought the fire-breathing robot dragon was cool, but what on earth were the actors doing?

That particular snake robot probably wouldn't do that great because of the rollers they're using. I absolutely see your point though, that would be a killer combination.

That dragon is pretty impressive. I've seen some pretty huge fire breathing sculptures (check out the serpent mother), but none were a free standing quadroped robot!

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
