@David: I disagree. I think Bill and David would applaad the boldness of going for the new life science market and leaving the olod mature T&M one behind.

The future of medicine is genomics and the new Agilent aims to be an arms supplier to it. That's the story here. Who do they go up against?

@Moronda: Sullivan said the T&M downturn has stablized at the bottom now. Is that how it feels to others?

? New Agilent and M may turn stronger

New T and M part of Agilent will be better able to focus  and will be come stronger.  As HP's slogan - there is always better way, my best wishes to pioneers of T and M instruments.

Danaher, I hope not. That would stink to have Tek and the company to be named later under one owner. SEC might not allow it.

T & M business is in the toilet

The T & M business is in the toilet at the moment. I guess nobody is buying many O-scopes this year. Agilent, Tek, and LeCrap have all had layoffs. If the leader in T&M is doing that bad then the others must really be hurting.

There is nowhere for the Agilent people to go. There is typically no hiring in a down industry. They will hang on there and hope things improve.

Agilent does have the best gear. Help them out and buy a new scope or other test equipment.

This is hardly a surprise considering Agilent had acquired Varian and cut off its network business completely at roughly within the same year back in 2009/2010; you can tell where the company is heading at the time already.

Is this a good move? Make sense from a gross margin point of view, but at the same time by constantly dividing to smaller pieces, they are basically setting themselves up for the eventual faith of being acquired by their arch rival Danaher (owner of Tektronix, Beckman Coulter).

I'd love to hear what Bill and Dave think of all this.  I suspect they'd be turning in their graves!

I'd love to hear from

1. Agilent employees about the feeling at the water cooler today

2. Life science experts about how the new Agilent shapes up in that sector.
