These are very good points and there should be more formal list. However, I love extempore speech and they are more engrossing. For this, one must have very sound understanding of subject and should have worked on that topic for few months or years.
Nearly 30 years ago, I joined Toastmasters for about a year. It was fun, and a good place to learn some public speaking. Also an interesting way to meet a few non-engineers. I'd highly recommend Toastmasters for any fellow engineer.
Public speaking should be encoraged among Engineers, it gives them lots of confidence and takes away shyness. It also reflects in the work results and team spirit. Enginner's work is quite tiring mentally, public speaking can give lots of relaxation.
Thanks for the tips Jeremy. I'd have to agree that just going out and practicing is going to have the biggest impact possible on your ability to speak. A nice personal event like the one you filmed looks like the perfect place to beat those speaking jitters down.
