I've actually printed the 3d gun. However it is a bunch of hype. you could build a safer, more reliable, and cheaper gun from a piece of pipe. You could also print a knife. 

The shows were just looking for some way to be relevant to the trends. That part is pretty cool.

The season opener of the TV show Elementary featured a murder committed with a plastic gun that was built using a 3D printer, then the gun was dissolved (except for the firing pin, which was a nail). Distrubing. But possible?
