@docdivakar: "I would like to learn more the new generation of open EDA tools"

In fact, CERN Hardware guys are actively contributing to KiCad development. Just wait for the next blog of this series for knowing more about this :-)

@Rick: ditto... I would like to learn more on the new generation of open EDA tools. I have seen some blurbs about gEDA and KiCAD in the past but I seriously doubt if these tools have found any success in commercial projects.

Looking forward to your columns

Hi Javi! This is a great topic for several columns. However I wonder if you also plan on publishing these columns in nontechnical journals for the masses. I often lament the loss/reduction of great research facilities here in the US. Bell Labs, Exxon Research, DuPont Experimental Station, Kodak Park, etc, etc. We need to get average people to understand the enormous benefits to basic research and support the funding of it even in these challenging economic times.

In the meantime you can browse the projects Cern and others have already published: www.ohwr.org/projects

I'll look forward to those posts on open hardware, as I am sure will many readers. Acronym check: is APP Max's All-Programmable Planet?

@rick: "I'll be interested to hear details of the open protocols and tools"

I'll try to cover these topics by publishing blogs halfway in between APP and EETimes, deppending  on intended public in order to post in one or the another.

I can assure you that  CERN's Hardware and Timing guys are actively doing a great work --  I've been able to se awesome Open Hardware projects. I'll keep you informed!!

@Max:"you will have to tell us all your tales when we meet up next year at Design West 2014"

There are plenty of tasty annecdotes that I cannot disclose in an officlal presentation, but I can do it for sure while quaffing a beer ;-)

I'm just working on the prposoal for a two hours tutorial in DW14 -- I feel I had material even for a four hours session, but I prefer not to go too much technical along the demo.

Hi Javi -- you are very lucky to have been able to visit CERN and work with the folks there for a week - -I wish I could have come with you -- you will have to tell us all your tales when we meet up next year at Design West 2014

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
