Is actually the one about the drones. I was shocked that there were over two times the number of amateur, civilian drones flying around than military ones. I will never hack at my neighbor's overgrowing trees again... :)

Ref pesky drones - shotguns are very effective, but I think there would be a good market for a reliable anti-drone weapon that's more.... shall we say..."Bird-friendly"?

Surely there must be an AVR project that could track the drones and give them a pin pointed EMP spike?

@Crusty1.... I think most of these hobby drones use wifi to communicate?  So a wifi jammer might be the way to go?

@David: Downing the blighters could well serve a noble end, by providing Max with a large source of parts for his robots?

I just wonder, if there are that many drones flying without anti collidance technology when the first mid air crash will happen? Drone to drone or drone to manned air craft?

@Crusty1  There's an idea.  Build a big powerful drone with hooks underneath and go drone-fishing......

avr processors do not do well in high electrcal noise environments  this is due to the issues with the risc technique of one clock per instruction and the faster atmel process for making the avr

Sylvie you mentioned that " 56% of develop prefer to use open source hardware like the arduino".

Is it just for prototyping or for final manufacturing ? And what percentage of that, specifically in final manufacturing comes from arduino vs mbed ?

I'm willing to bet that most of the drones that are counted are tiny hobby aircraft (multirotors as well as fixed wing). Most that I've seen bear little to no risk of injury should a crash happen due to light weight and small props.

Compare that to military drones that are relatively huge, made of metal, and sometimes well armed. There is a huge difference.

Alex, the statistic isn't exactly clear on that point, but I'd say with near certainty it's used mainly for prototyping. The actual data point from the element14 survey said:

"More than half (56%) of professional engineers are more likely to use open source hardware such as Arduino and BeagleBone in 2013. Among hobbyists, that figure jumps to 82%."


The high numbers seem to stem from the fact that engineers like to have access to as many resources as possible, and the open source community provides that. Strong user communities help with ease of access and use.
