LDOs are certainly very simple devices to use them in design compared to the switching regulators. There are certainly lot of them which are must have in the designs as per the need.

I get a good chuckle over TI's use of the TPS prefix in their regulator lineup.  I have the cover sheet for the TPS54310 data sheet pinned up on my cube wall. Bill Lumbergh would have loved this - a genuine TPS report.

I agree with your statement about LDO noise vs switchers--but some of the newest switchers are extremely low noise and may be low-enough for your application--don't rule them out too soon!

In a low-level analog environment the LDOs keep the supply nice and clean.  Swiitchers on the other hand scream like a banshee.  Just try scope probing those little analog signals with that switcher howling away.
