Exactly, prabhakar. They are actually addressing the issues of intelligent fleet systems. They even went so far as saying that where self-driving cars will be implement first will be fleet systems. (I just didn't have a good pix to include in the slideshow. Sorry about that!)
ITS World Congress is actually addressing the issues related to making vehicles (passenger cars, fleets, public transportation, etc.) and vehicle infrastructure (highways, regular roads, etc.) more intelligent. In their efforts to do so, vehicles and infrastructure need to "transport" data associated with the infrastructure as well as among vehicles themselves.
ITS (Intelligent Transport System) It's for DATA Transport or Vehicle Transport? Both the transport terms are being used in the world congress alternatively. So this congress was addressing both of these two transport terms or it was basically for Data Transport and Vehicle Transport also got a travel with it!!! Toyota COMS is a very nice design as being seen from the picture and 60km/h is a good speed for city traversals.
All these new car concepts for personal transport are very good. As far the Intelligent trasnport systems are concerned , more focus is being put on passenger vehicles. But what about the commercial vehicles plying on the same roads? Those huge contaniers and trucks pose more traffic hazard than the passenger vehicles. So instead of targeting solutions for the vehicles which are creating the road safety hazards, we are concentrating more on the defence mechanisms of the larger passenger car community.
If we focus on the intelligent systems which will prohibit the trouble makers from flouting the traffic rules then it will be less expensive a project, in my opinion.
Secure wireless links need to be a priority for this -- Given that most wireless links are based on the morre than a decade old ARM 7, which has no MMU or security features, and thus renders the code quite vulnerable to hacking, this needs to be looked at ASAP -- I cannot begain to count the number of times I personally have been hacked via WiFi or Bluetooth - and the virtually constant electronic harasment myself and my family receive. You cannot immagine the number of young punk cyber-bullies out there exploting holes in WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G and even now 4G. No one will trust this technology unless it is absolutely secure to avoid this constant form of electronic harasment based on one's Job, Political Affiliations, Mediical Conditions, religion, or any other item you can imagine that would make a person a target for this type of harassment.
