Well, the fix was indeed to remagnetize the small magnets but, luckily, not every time I want to play a tape!

I removed the motor rotor so as to expose the three small sensing coils, then I briefly put a strong neodymium magnet close to the core of each of them.

That's all.

Ad I played many tapes since then. ;-)

Actually, I think it's close to 10 years now that it works flawlessly, but lately my backup hi-fi stack includes a CD player (vintage 1982) so I don't listen to so many cassettes these days...

I'm guessing he just remagnetizes every time he needs to play a tape?

So, what was the "no-brainer" fix?  

You said you could not replace the motor. and that the motor's magnets fail over time.  Shorting the coils does not seem like a fix, so much as periodic maintenence.
