From what I heard, Allwinner is losing to both Rockchip, and of course MediaTek. The IPO is more or less a forced one. System OEMs all claim both Allwinner and Rockchip will be crushed by MediaTek in 2014.
I tend to agree with the OEMs as they are the customers of these AP vendors.
Kris, it is not just the fast turn for the circuit board+assembly, but the entire product (like tablets) prototyped in 2-weeks (if that is true) is very impressive indeed. I don't know of any EDA / MCAD tool that makes the virtual prototyping emulation of this in a meaningful way. It seems like AllWinner must have formalized a process that leads to such turn times.
When I visited them last, they were planning to build a big campus. I mean, REALLY a big campus for the company, which will be also located in Zhuhai, known as "Riviera of China"!
Actually Zhuhai's proximity to both Shenzhen and Hong Kong appears to be working for their business. But the company's original founders, I was told, liked the proximity to Macao and Hong Kong for such reasons as more TV channels.
